Small and medium sized businesses have been offered a life line as they watch a collaboration between the British Chambers of Commerce and Dell create an online television resource specialising in offering advice during the current financial downturn.
The site, smallbusinessadvice.tv, came about after a recent poll released information showing that a quarter of the seven hundred business owners questioned felt that current television shows available failed to show the reality of the public’s idea of a business life. Programmes such as Dragon’s Den and The Apprentice have created a false image of what business in today’s society actually is.
The former CNBC anchor, and senior producer of the BBC TV News, Sean Walsh, will host the show, which will be making its debut on 28th November.
John Dunsmure, managing director of the BBC, agrees with the direction the new website is taking, claiming, “I meet with businesses every day and have often heard criticism about the usefulness of a great deal of current business programming. Smallbusinessadvice.tv is designed to plug this gap for targeted and highly practical content.”
President for Dell in EMEA, Dave Marmonti, said, “Small businesses are a vital part of the UK economy. Dell wants to play a key role in helping small businesses thrive, and has launched smallbusinessadvice.tv with the BCC to be a practical information resource, providing advice on a wide range of topics that owners can draw on to make their own business a success.”
Small businesses have recently been complaining about the lack of available resources for finding fresh talent, and John Dunsmure has stated recently that many small businesses were failing to discover the necessary employees. Dunsmure has said, “In a lot of the cases, we just don’t have enough of the people that are out there. We’re going on about unemployment numbers, that’s fine at one level but there aren’t enough of the right people with the right skill sets to fill some of the positions out there. We get told that by businesses every year. The government spends billions every year to address this issue but we’re still falling short.”
Dell also discovered that many of these small businesses, 44 per cent, are finding that their most effective method of finding employees was through the internet and this is sure to have been the thinking behind the new online television site which will aim to be one of the first places small businesses turn for advice. The research also showed that a staggering 78 per cent of those small businesses asked would make better use of the Internet if the relevant information were available.
Over time, the show will aim to focus on topics such as social networking for small businesses as well as information about how small businesses can cut down on their energy costs as well as their carbon footprint. A section for instructional videos is also being planned with specific areas providing tips for small businesses to prevail over common struggles. The site also hopes to be able to provide business case studies.
