Do you trust your employee to work remotely?

Trust in a relationship is practically everything.  If you can’t trust your significant other to do anything out of your site then what’s the point of being in a relationship.

Apparently trust is also an issue throughout businesses across Britain who claim that they wouldn’t trust their employees to work remotely according to a survey conducted for BT Business and Nortel.

8 per cent of firms are untrusting…

It’s worse than you might think, as well.  Only a meagre 8 per cent of businesses around the United Kingdom would actually trust their employees to effectively work from home leaving a huge proportion of the businesses in the country, 92 per cent, claiming that they wouldn’t see remote working being productive.

Employees don’t feel the same way, however, as 42 per cent of workers in businesses in Britain feel that they would trust themselves to work effectively at home – in fact they feel that they would do a better job…

Boost productivity by any means.

The Federation of Small Businesses’ National Chairman, John Wright, underlined the necessity for small businesses in the country to use any means possible to boost productivity.

“This boils down to a matter of trust. In the current climate, small firms need to be operating at full stretch. Last week’s bad weather demonstrated the need for British businesses to enable their employees to be productive, wherever they are,” said Wright.

It would seem as though employers are reluctant to let go of the pre-historic desk and cubicle systems that have been in place for so long now, even though employees are begging for a looser leash to get work done more effectively.

Employees want it, but will it be better?

Employees have been claiming that they feel as though better work would be done if they were given the needed technology and support remotely.

BT has underlined their own answer to the remote working issue by highlighting BTs move into the future of remote working.

The IT services director at BT Business, John Dovey, has stated how BT’s employees can work with teams, take customer calls and queries and perform other tasks while on the move.

“BT’s 70,000 flexible workers have saved us £500 million in building costs and 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

“We can effectively manage our employees and have seen a 30% rise in productivity. By unifying communications systems, our business customers can be more responsive to new opportunities and customer enquiries wherever they are,” said Dovey.

Single communications system.

Dovey also mentions how managers are able to keep an eye on the employees productivity which effectively frees up costs and duplicate work because, according to Dovey, every issue of the employees working day is compressed into one single, manageable communications system.

The survey was performed by YouGov and questioned 3,473 employees in businesses with fewer than 500 workers and who were employed for at least 3 months.
