Networking is Essential for a Successful Business

Networking consists of talking to and mixing with as many people as possible, although, certain people are more important to mingle with than others.

Advice from the CIPD is that: “It’s important for new businesses to get as involved as they can in their professional area through local networking groups.

“Meeting people who are doing the same kind of work can help you to learn on two levels: from professionals in the industry and from other small businesses who might be experiencing the same thing. It can also be a useful source for mentors and ultimately employees, when you’re in a position to recruit.”

Help Can Be Found in the Most Unlikely Places

Ms Brown from a card company in Cambridge is an example of someone who has taken this advice, and therefore decided to ring people she found in the Yellow Pages in the same industry as hers, in both competing and complimentary businesses. She found that: “Everyone I spoke to was happy to offer advice and it helped me learn about practical issues such as what mark up to put on. I’ve even teamed up with someone who makes wedding hats – we’re able to share mailings lists and leads.”

Another example is that of Jon Howes from a chip designing company, who networked in order to find his company a new technical manager. He said: “I knew any number of people who were more than technically qualified. But it wasn’t until my friend’s suggestion that I found someone who would also fit in personally.”

Other benefits of networking can also be as easy as discussing with people things like suppliers they use and trust. You may not necessarily end up with this supplier, but it’s a good first step in finding the right supplier for your business.

You must also remember that, like most things in business, networking well means you have to give something back in return. If someone is going to do you a favour or some advice, you will owe them advice or interaction in the future.
