Poor morale can bring your business down!
Economic downturns, such as the one businesses are dealing with today, can destroy businesses – they can scare off the customers, promote unemployment and especially have harsh effects on employee morale.
As a manager you need to be able to understand what to do to supply a much needed morale boost – read on to discover how you can do just that easily and more importantly without spending ridiculous amounts of money in the process.
1. Walk and Talk – Take a moment to understand what is going on in your employee’s minds as they are the ones that will be suffering under the strain of an economic downturn. Walk around and ask how your employees are – be genuine and be sincere…they will see straight through an act so make sure that you honestly want to know how they are!
2. Respect! – Employees need to be given a level of respect otherwise their morale will drop like a lead balloon. Don’t treat them like children working under you but instead give them the respect that they deserve as they are working hard for the business.
3. The Door Is Always Open – Make sure your door is always open for your employees. Be approachable and your employees will feel comfortable around you. Hiding behind an office door separates the management from the staff which is bad for morale.
4. Training! – One of the most important assets of a business is the staff so don’t forget to invest and believe in their talent. Spend money training your staff and keeping them up-to-date and they will be happier workers.
5. Well Done… - A “well done” never went amiss. By confirming that employees are doing a good job will be a great booster for employee morale. Thank your employees when they meet a deadline and let them know that their hard work is appreciated – they’ll work even harder next time.
6. Team Work – There is no “I” in team, as we all know. Get employees together to do some team building work and they will feel less individual and more a part of a family which is beneficial for morale.
7. Expect the Unexpected – Do something out-of-the-blue for your employees and make it a nice surprise. Buy lunch for everyone one day or organise a lunchtime game of football. This is a great way of splitting the day up, getting everyone together in a social atmosphere and of course boosting morale – you can’t go wrong.
8. Believe! – Probably one of the best morale boosters is a simple belief in your employees. If they feel that you believe in their ability to work effectively then they will start to take ownership of their tasks.
It is important to take time out to understand how to tackle morale issues as they could really bring a business down – understand what is happening and act quickly to bring your employee’s morale back up.
