According to new research from BT Business and Cisco, over half of private sector businesses believe that SME suppliers are less competitive than their larger counterparts.
The research found that 57 percent of larger company’s don’t feel that SMEs are capable of providing round the clock support, and 52 percent say they are unable to offer competitive rates. However, 87 percent of the 253 company’s quizzed; say small businesses are more likely to have the personal chemistry conductible to a smooth supplier relationship.
John Dunsmure, managing director of the British Chambers of Commerce, says: “These findings are extremely worrying for UK businesses and especially start ups. As such I would urge businesses to outsource anything that is secondary to their core business competence and invest their precious resources in what will help set them apart from the competition.”
Its not all bad news though, the research found that 72 percent of managers believe that small businesses are well placed to offer a more personalised service hat larger competitors, with customer service and responsiveness cited in the top five reasons to award a contract.
