How you can see out the recession…
Although the recession may be knocking on your door, unemployment rates are soaring and the country’s morale has dropped through the floor, it doesn’t mean that the outlook has to be bleak for your business.
A recession doesn’t guarantee that every business in the country is going to fail - so don’t panic, it doesn’t mean your business is going to collapse! There are a few things you need to keep in mind if you want to be in business when the recession finally goes away;
Expenses
You should be looking at cutting back on your expenses - perhaps this is obvious but a lot of businesses don’t bother even looking at reducing their expenses.
You need to find a balance where you are still getting the most for your money without losing too much of the quality. The key to doing this is to shop around and get a number of different quotes from different suppliers so you can make sure you are getting the most for your money.
Cash Flow
If you don’t know this by now then perhaps you should sell your business and move on - you need cash to keep your business running. Cash is often considered more important for a business than profit - profit is great but nothing will beat cash in tough times.
You should be keeping in mind that the way to get a strong cash flow is to have more money coming in than there is going out - this means you should be vigilant about what you spend your money on, perhaps this is more important now more than ever.
Sell Small
People don’t tend to continue buying large amounts through a recession and instead prefer to buy small. You should put your business in a position to be able to sell small to meet the demand.
Marketing
One thing your business shouldn’t be avoiding is marketing. A staggering number of businesses through a recession make the decision to cut back on marketing as a first step - this is a mistake!
In fact what you should be doing is staying consistent with your marketing - this way you’ll be able to keep a customer base strong and fresh by attracting new business that you should be able to hold on to when the recession comes to an end.
Opportunity
A recession is a great time to keep your eyes peeled for opportunities. People will be making mistakes left, right and centre and you need to be aware and prepared to make the most out of their issues.
Opportunities could involve another company’s staff, products or customer interaction for example - if your competitor is pulling back on marketing you should take the opportunity to push your marketing to snap up their customers.
