Stress can ruin your business!

Stress can be a business killer – around 13.5 million working days are lost through stress last year alone.  By taking some time to understanding what causes stress in the workplace and how to avoid its knock-on effects you might be saving your business a lot of valuable time and money.

Identify the problem…

A day off work here and there is no big deal – whether you’re ill, exhausted or simply just need a day off: as long as they are not a regular occurrence then everything is pretty much alright.  Your business should be able to deal with a few absent employees here and there from time to time.

However, if stress is involved then the effects to the business can be extremely relevant.  Stress can lead to weeks or months of absence which can seriously take its toll on the business.

It is important as the manager of the business to take some training in understanding the best methods of dealing with employees suffering with stress related issues.  A manager needs to be able to identify the problems and then be in a position to be able to deal with them.

Stress will not only effect the employee or employees in question but will also have adverse effects on morale, staff happiness and more importantly from a business point of view the business will be suffering economically.

The causes of stress in the workplace…

You may feel that there is a stress related issue occurring in your place of work, but how can you be sure?  By understanding a few of the causes of stress in the workplace you will be able to understand why the issues are there and how they can be fixed.

•    Long hours.
•    Lack of resources.
•    Unclear job roles.
•    Ineffective management.

It is important to remember to keep aware of these causes of stress as they could be going on in your business right now.

What to do…

As an employer one of the first things you can do is to simply talk to your employee.  There is very little stopping stress from home flowing over to the workplace and vice versa so by being available with advice and information you will be going a long way to helping your troubled employees.

Worries about job security is a good example of how stress can effect employees through the current economic downturn and so by talking to employees and keeping them up to speed about the future of the company.

It can also be a good idea for an employer to sit down with an employee and ask them what resources they feel that they would need to make their job easier such as updated computers.

If you are worried about stress harming your business then the best thing for you to do is to get some stress awareness training – it will be worth it!
