Regulations are about to be put in place to help protect consumers from ‘unfair trading practices’.

Consumers have been getting ripped off for decades by unscrupulous traders so on May 26th, when government business advisory service, Business Link, says that new rules will be in place that intends to stop marketing and selling techniques which are misleading or aggressive, small business owners should take note and adjust their business practices if need be.

Business Link is a government body that provides information for small firms on starting and growing their business, as well as on specific issues such as marketing techniques or setting up premises.

Such practices include providing false or inaccurate information, failing to reveal important information or using aggressive sales tactics to ‘coerce or unduly influence’ consumers’ decisions.

There are 31 activities that will no longer be acceptable business practices, such as claiming untrue professional endorsements from a professional or public body or displaying un-authorised trust or quality marks.

Other actions that are prohibited include refusing to leave a customers home or offering goods at a price that the business is unable to honor. Creating the false impression that a customer has won a competition and anything that claims the consumer must pay money before claiming a prize.
