If you are a motorist on UK roads, then you must have car insurance. As per law, since 1930 and the updated Road Traffic Act, 1988, you must have at least a third party insurance cover. Also, it is important to have a basic insurance to cover third parties. You are legally bound to possess some kind of protection or insurance against your liability to third parties which include pedestrians or road users in case of any personal injury inflicted on them or on damage to their property caused by your road use. In other words, other people are protected and covered against any accident caused by your vehicle. Insurance also protects the parties by bearing the costs of damage to the vehicle, injury and legal costs.
Just imagine a situation where you, without an insurance cover, drive into another vehicle accidentally. In that case, it would be very difficult to afford the cost of damage to the vehicle or the expenditure of medical bills for the injury. Any legal cost in the case may also prove to be a substantial burden for you. Road accidents occur due to various reasons. Sometimes without any fault on your part, after an accident, you may be forced to foot the bills. Even when you are a good driver having a best track record and will not be consciously causing any accident, then also you have to insure your vehicle. For instance, your vehicle may result in collision when you swerve to prevent a stray animal or pedestrian in the road or skid on black ice. Hence car insurance is not just a matter of choice or preference, but more of a legal and economic necessity in most cases.
You should recognize your level of cover on the basis of legal requirement. “Third Party Fire and Theft insurance” comes handy in the event of theft or fire. So, you should have the desire to protect and secure yourself against risks and eventualities. Even with great advancement in anti-theft technology items such as alarms and immobilizer, you have to face the risk of your car getting damaged or stolen by theft groups.
Further, by upgrading your less expansive car insurance to a comprehensive cover you can protect yourself against eventualities and you get indemnified for you own car damage, even if the accident happened due to your negligent driving. Though it is not a legal requirement to have a comprehensive insurance cover for your own safety you can opt for it. It is good to have such insurance because you can afford to replace your own vehicle when it gets written off.
You should also renew your insurance regularly within the stipulated time period as if the policy was not in force when you met with an accident, you cannot make a claim. Before looking for cheap and best rates of insurance, you should also analyze your actual requirements and circumstances so that the insurance policy taken by you reflects your real needs.
