Work Place Stress Becoming A Real Problem?

In a recession as deep as the one we are in now, so it is only natural that many of your employees may be feeling a little stressed.

Group Aviva Risk Management says that in the UK, employees lost 13.5 million working days in 2007-8 due to depression, anxiety and work-related stress.

Knowing this, it makes sense to try and avoid workplace stress, but what can you do to make sure you have the resources to reduce your staffs workload and tackle stress.

The major consultant for Aviva Risk Management says that UK employees are working more and more long hours. Though the group warns that this could increase the risk of mental health problems in the future.

Employees Should Focus On Stress Management

59% of employers apparently do not believe that longer working hours increase employees productivity. On top of this, apparently 46% of employees are not rewarded for putting in all these extra hours.

Aviva’s UK occupational health department, Alex Marshall, warns employers of the dangers of overworking employees and how to protect them from the effects of very long hours.

He says: “There should be a strong focus on stress management, which should be treated like any other workplace hazard. A risk assessment should be carried out, both at organisational level and within each team, ensuring ongoing assessment.”

Only last month, a Business Link advisor – Alexandra Shoobert, reminded employers of the fact that they are responsible for the protection of their staff against becoming ill because of work related stress.
