When we think of bullying, we traditionally think of playground bullying among children and teenagers, however, one in ten employees is affected by bullying in the workplace.

What Effects??

If bullying and harassment in the workplace is permitted to continue unnoticed, it can have some serious repercussions on your staffs personal lives, general wellbeing and morale. It can also be damaging from a business point of view as well as it leads to higher absence levels, reduced productivity, low staff morale and possibly even tribunals.

What To Look For?

As an employer, you should be constantly on the lookout for indications that an employee is being bullied so that you notice it before it can develop into anything too serious. Indicators you should look for include:

• Blocking promotional or training opportunities

• Constant changing targets or guidelines

• Imposing menial tasks

• Interference with post or other methods of communication

• Overbearing supervision

• Refusal to delegate

• Undermining a competent employee through work overload or constant criticism

• Withholding information or giving over incorrect information

Having A System In Place

The best thing your business can do is have a policy that clearly states that bullying is not permitted and will not be tolerated. This policy should outline the steps an employee can take if they feel that they are becoming a victim to harassment or bullying.

Of course, employers should also always set a good example by consulting and communicating and maintaining fair policies and being supportive if a complaint about bullying is made. If you have an organisational statement about all staff and the standards of behaviour expected, it can make it easier for individuals to be aware of their responsibilities.
