What about start-ups?

Lord Mandelson has been blamed for the lack of interest and support shown to small businesses in Britain.  Start-up businesses have been totally neglected despite a number of claims announcing the importance on the emphasis on growth for the industry.  Well don’t worry because we’re here to pick up where the government let you down…

Writing a business plan can be one of the most important steps for a small start-up business, therefore it’s best to get things right;

Research

The first thing you need to do before venturing down business plan avenue is research.  Make sure to understand exactly what each section of the business plan requires and what the plan sets out to achieve.

Legality

Although you may be engulfed in the idea formulation of the business image and you don’t want to give much thought the legal side of business life, then I’m afraid that you’re in for a bit of disappointment.

You need to stay on top of every single aspect of the business, from the aim of the business to the operation and logistical sides of the business.  Immerse yourself in every aspect of the business otherwise you will be caught out.

Numbers

Math may not be your forte but you can’t let that stop your business thrive.  You need to think numbers when you start-up a business.  There are start-up costs, funding requirements and cash flow forecasts amongst many other things.  If you need help then go out and get it…you can’t afford to make a mistake!

Industry Reports

Get to know your target market as much as possible - if you don’t then you may be walking into a death trap without a need for your service or product.  Look for information on your competition, target audience and industry participants…this information is vital for the well-being of your company.

Employment Concerns

There is a plan in your head regarding the direction of your business, if you want that plan to become a reality then you need to make sure that the right people are employed to make it all happen.

Although you may think that you can do everything yourself, you aren’t Superman and you will need help.  When outsourcing is not an option you will need full-time staff - therefore understand the roles that will need to be filled and be prepared when looking for employees to fill them.

Mentor

As with the employment concerns you might feel like you can take the reigns and do it all yourself, you cannot.  You will do well having a mentor backing you up, who can guide you and who you can feel confident talking to with regards to private business matters.

A mentor can be absolutely priceless - they will often be either close friends or family and will be able to be both an ear for listening and a mouth for advice when it is needed.

Are you being brave and embracing your new start-up idea even though we are fighting through a recession or are you putting your plans on hold until the economic climate warms up?
