Limited Companies

There is more to a name than you might have originally thought - choosing your limited company’s name can often be more of a challenge than you would think as there are certain factors you should be aware of.

Putting aside the obvious business reasons attached with choosing a name for your limited company, there are also rules that must be followed - if you decide to avoid these rules then you could simply face rejection from the Companies House.

If you want to be successful with your limited companies name application then follow our advice - save yourself some hassle;

Unique

Each name must be totally unique - you cannot name your limited company with the same name as another.  This means you must do your research and find out which names have been taken - the registration agent will be able to let you know.

Ltd

Don’t forget the “Ltd” letters of Limited suffix after the private limited company’s name - each plc must display their limited status in this way, otherwise they will be rejected.

Changes

Don’t forget, you will have an opportunity to change the name of your company later on down the line but you won’t be able to change the registration number.

Offense

Make sure you steer clear of offensive or abusive names.  They won’t obviously be useful for your business and they can lead the possibility of being rejected so make sure to stay away from such terms and words.

Sensitive Words

You must also stay away from “sensitive” words.  Sensitive words, as described by the Companies House website, are “words and expressions included in a company name, which may imply business pre-eminence, a particular  status or a specific function”.

If you want a successful application you must be able to justify why the words used in your company’s name are not sensitive, otherwise you may face having your application rejected.

If you are unsure of what words are classified as sensitive then you can find a list on the Companies House website.

Online

It is a good idea to make a search for available domain names when choosing your company’s name.  You don’t want to choose a name and then find out later that you won’t be able to set up a website using the same name…this could be devastating for your online presence.
